City returned from their long journey to deepest Norfolk with another point in their battle to avoid relegation to the Dr
Martens Western Division but were left regretting failing to capitalise on a number of late chances as other results went
against them. Normally a draw at King's Lynn, where City have not won for over 40 years, would be considered a good result
but with all the other relegation threatened sides, apart from bottom two Merthyr and Salisbury, recording victories the
stalemate leaves both sides facing an anxious last five weeks of the season. City's woes were also increased with captain
Colin Towler and loan striker Dave Gilroy limping out of the action to join midfielder Iain Harvey in a battle to be fit
for the vital two games over the Easter period. The absence of Harvey saw top scorer Adrian Foster returning to the side,
Paul Milsom dropping back into the midfield, in the only change from the side that beat Stafford a week earlier.
Overall the match was typical of a clash between two struggling side as the home side started the stronger but faded toward
the end of the match allowing City their best period. In between both teams where full of effort but quality football was
definitely conspicious by its absence. As said the Linnetts began well and, with greater composure in front of goal, could
have been three goals up within the first ten minutes. Minnet headed narrowly over the bar on three minutes before Clements sent
another header wide two minutes later. The best opening though fell to Robinson after nine minutes only for Gary Kemp to clear
his effort off the line. Having weathered this early storm City began to impose themselves on the game with Andy Williams
and Matt Hale looking particularly threatening on either flank. However, their hopes received a blow on 26 minutes when
Towler limped from the action. Badman replaced the skipper and City switched to from a 3-5-2 line-up to a more traditional
4-4-2 but within three minutes of Towler's departure they fell behind. Wright lifted a hopeful ball into the area where
Mark Hervin came but never got close allowing Watts a simple header into the open net. This lead only lasted three minutes
though as City drew level through Foster. Keeper Wilson flapped at a cross by Drysdale and the ball fell to Milsom. He turned
it back goalwards where Foster applied the finishing touch from just six yards out to claim his fifth goal in successive games.
The remainder of the half saw Hervin redeem himself for his mistake. First he produced a stunning flying save from Clements
point-blank effort before blocking Wright's shot after the forward had burst through City's back line.
The second half began with the action largely confined to the centre of the park and City were forced into a further change
on the hour mark when Gilroy limped off the pitch. His replacement was Assistant Manager Gary Smart and within moments
of his arrival he began a move that ended with Williams blasting over with Wilson's goal at his mercy. Smart was also instrumental
in a move involving Drysale and Foster. The left back's accurate cross found Foster on the edge of the box. He elected to
try a first time shot but couldn't keep the effort below the bar. These misses preceded another good spell for the Norfolk
side which almost finished with Clark restoring their lead. A neat flick by Watts found him just six yards from goal but he
sent a shot deep into the park that surrounds the Walks Stadium. A further unenforced change saw Jamie Gosling replace Hale
and with Milsom pushing up to form a three-man attack City could (should?) have won the game in the closing stages. With
ten remaining Foster had a strong penalty appeal turned down after Fuff blunded him over and three minutes later Gosling
sent a curling shot two yards wide of the goal. The final opening fell to Smart in stoppage time as he ran onto Milsom's
pass but with Wilson stranded in no-mans land he could only lift his lobbed shot wide of the inviting net. The final whistle
saw City's players receive a deserved ovation from their vocal followers but whether the result will be viewed as a point
gained or two lost will become clearer in the forthcoming weeks.
