Following the devastating defeat at Newport IOW seven days earlier City gave themselves a relegation lifeline by overcoming mid-table Folkestone Invicta at Twerton Park. This victory combined with results elsewhere saw City climb back out of the relegation zone and meant the battle to remain in the Dr Martens Premier Division will go to the final day of the season. The hero was top scorer Adrian Foster, as he produced a stunning 57th minute strike, his 20th goal of the season, to calm City's nerves. Even his penalty miss with ten minutes remaining was forgotten after Dan Cleverley blasted home the rebound. The youngster had been recalled to the starting line-up after loan striker Dave Gilroy returned to Bristol Rovers. The one other change to the Newport IOW side saw Mark Badman replace injured Mark Hale.

Facing a side who had lost their previous three outings City began cautiously but slowly began to gain the upper hand. It took 20 minutes for them to create a worthwhile opening - Joe Collins seeing a header from a Jason Drysdale corner block by keeper Wietecha's legs. Ten minutes later Drysdale sent a free-kick narrowly over the bar following a foul on Foster. The 35th minute saw Mark Hervin called into serious action for the first time when he turned a 25-yard Chandler effort over the bar. The resulting corner saw Towse hook a good chance high of the City goal. To their credit City were being patient despite the important of winning the clash and twice within the closing moments of the half could have taken the lead. For the second time Foster got clear of the Folkestone defence. The first time had seen a recovering defender deny him a sight of goal but this time he got a shot in that Wietecha could only parry. The ball rolled agonisingly toward the penalty spot and the following up Collins but he was just beaten to it by Towse and the danger was cleared. An even clearer chance fell to Thorne in stoppage time. Wietecha could only weakly punch Bailey's cross toward the City captain. He headed the ball back toward the unguarded goal only for it to hit the outside of the post.

So despite their dominance City came out after the break still looking for that vital first goal. The only excitement of the opening stages of the second period saw Invicta's Larkin and Henry go into the referee's notebook but on 57 minutes the breakthrough finally arrived. Gosling began the move down the right flank before playing the ball into Foster. He ran toward goal, ignoring the overlapping Badman, and cut inside two defenders. He was still 20 yards from goal but with a swing of his left foot sent the ball curling beyond Wietecha into the roof of the net. Rather than sitting back City went looking for a second goal to put the game beyond their opponents. Wietecha's pushed a Collins drive over the bar and a neat move between Gosling and Foster ended with the latter firing a shot narrowly wide. As long as they were just a goal ahead City were always vunerable when the visitors threatened but apart from a scuffed shot by Dent their defence held strong. With ten minutes remaining the worry was dispelled when the second goal finally arrived. Badman's run into the box was ended by Towse's clumsy challenge and the referee awarded a penalty. With the latest regular penalty taker Jason Drysdale already off the pitch Foster stepped up to the spot. His low shot left Wietecha rooted to his spot but cannoned back off the foot of the left-hand upright. But in contrast to previous penalty misses the rebound was fired home by Cleverley to the relief of all concerned with City. With the three points safely bagged City comfortably played out the closing minutes and could begin looking forward to another must-win match at Worcester in a weeks time.
