Report taken from by Richard Gadsby
It was touted as Andy Williams' first game back from injury but the return of another former fans' favourite condemned Bath
City to a controversial cup defeat. Martin Paul, who swapped Twerton Park for Cossham Street just last month, scored one
goal and set up the winner as Mangotsfield scrapped their way into the last eight of the Errea Cup at City's expense. City
boss John Relish admitted he wished the striker was still at the club - but felt his side should have won anyway following
two contentious Mangotsfield goals. "The first goal was clearly offside - I was level with it," said Relish. "I couldn't
see the second one but our lads say it was even worse. It makes the result very frustrating because there were some good
performances tonight and we were easily the better team. We feel a little bit let down."
The game started scrappily and there were few clear openings at either end for the first 20 minutes. Martin Paul, clearly
loving the prospect of taking on his former teammates, was Field's most dangerous player and almost opened the scoring with
a delicate lob that was too low to beat Paul Evans. After that, all the best chances fell to City. Chris Holland headed wide
from a corner, Alex Sykes smashed a low drive inches off target and a Scott Partridge shot was only just charged down by
the last defender. Of all the City fringe players on show, it was youngsters Adam Shackell and Craig Davidge who made the
most of their chances to impress - with Davidge seemingly able to beat marker Wayne Thorne at will. It proved too much for
the on-loan Thorne in the end and he was booked for a cynical hack on the winger as the half drew to a close.
Sykes missed a sitter just after the break when a low cross from Davidge found him unmarked eight yards out. City increased
the pressure but Mangotsfield just managed to hold on and Ross Casey and Luke Prince both came close for the home side. The
game's biggest cheer came on the hour mark when Andy Williams was brought on for his first City game in 18 months as part
of a double substitution. It was fellow substitute Tony Bird who proved more influential, though, and he fired City in front
following a superb first touch and pass from Partridge. It looked like City would go on to win comfortably, but
Mangotsfield pulled level when a long ball over the top found Paul unmarked. The City defence looked for the linesman's
flag but it never came and Paul's perfect chip over Evans forced the game into extra-time. Both teams looked tired in the
extra 30 minutes but City still created some great chances. But it was Mangotsfield who grabbed the crucial goal when Paul
broke free from what looked like another offside position. The striker waited for Evans to commit himself before
unselfishly slipping the ball to David Seal to tap home.
