Bath City crashed out of the FA Trophy at a fog-bound Twerton Park last night after Farnborough scored an extra-time winner to book their place in the last 32.The hosts played some of their best football at the start of extra-time, but were finally undone by a slightly fortunate winner. With Farnborough's first break of the extra period, Bradley Garness blasted a shot from the edge of the area which cannoned off Chris Holland's stretched leg and looped into the net. As if on cue, a thick wall of fog suddenly descended and, despite the amount of time played, there was a serious case for abandoning the game. It was near impossible to pick out players in the second period due to the lack of visibility and a tired-looking City controlled possession, but never really threatened to equalise.

After a tight opening spell, City went on to shade the first half after a workmanlike performance. It was hardly elegant, but with Dean Clarke and Steve Jones hassling and hounding Farnborough all over the pitch, it was the hosts who created the better chances despite some good football from the visitors. The first chance came on seven minutes after a quick pass from Mark McKeever released Scott Partridge. The City striker beat his man as he raced down the left-hand side, but his chip to the back post was over-hit and Arek Zarczynski could only shoot into the side netting. Two minutes later, Holland headed just wide under pressure from a McKeever corner. Another Holland header from a McKeever set piece saw Matt Coupe slide in, unmarked, at the back post only to steer the ball just wide. Farnborough's best spell followed with Garness curling an 18-yard effort just over with Paul Evans beaten. Russell Pym forced Evans into a low stop from range and Coupe then made a crucial sliding interception to deny Richard Hodgson at the back post with eight minutes left before the break. City weathered the storm and, just before the half-time interval, a speculative Zarczynski shot flew wide after a route-one clearance from Coupe.

The second half was played with a sense of urgency, if very little skill. There was a distinct lack of composure in the final third from both sides and chances were at a premium for the first 20 minutes. When the first chance did come, it should have been put away. A perfectly-placed cross from Hodgson found Michael Charles unmarked inside the six-yard box, but he inexplicably hit the top of the cross bar with all the goal to aim for. With the thought of extra-time looming, the game became stretched and it was City who made the most of the extra space. The biggest cheer of the game came with the appearance of substitute Craig Davidge, following his remarkable ten-day recovery from serious injury. McKeever, Zarczynski and Mike Green all came close for City, but Partridge missed the clearest chance after pouncing on a defensive error to go one on one with Kevin Scriven only to blast the ball straight at the Farnborough shot-stopper. City piled on the pressure with time running out, but could not find a way through with Zarczynski and Partridge seemingly reluctant to shoot after working their way into great positions. It was left to extra-time and for Farnborough to seal a date with Braintree in the next round.
