Report taken from
Bath City's progress to the second round of the inaugural Setanta Shield offered little cheer for boss John Relish as goalscorer Matt Coupe and Sekani Simpson picked up knocks that could keep them out of Saturday's Blue Square South clash with Basingstoke Town.City were never behind in a match that saw Weston-super-Mare lose at Twerton Park for the second time in the space of three days - they were knocked out of the FA Cup by TeamBath on Sunday - but needed an extra-time double from substitute Darren Edwards to go through.
Centre-back Coupe's opener was cancelled out by a Marc McGregor goal to force the extra half-hour.
McGregor again equalised after an Edwards penalty had put the hosts ahead for the second time, but the City striker had the last word to take over from Dave Gilroy at the top of the club's 2007-08 goalscoring charts with six.
At the end of the game, Coupe was nursing a hamstring problem and full-back Simpson a groin strain, leaving Relish with distinctly mixed feelings.
He said: "It was a very difficult game and in no way, shape or form did we want extra-time.
"You have to get the players in a mindset of trying to win every game you play in, but there were only 160-odd there on an awful night and it doesn't look as if this cup has captured the imagination of the supporters.
"The rules state that you have to play ten of the players on the team sheet the week before, so even if we wanted to play the youth team, we couldn't.
"It is difficult with a small squad and those knocks to Matt and Sekani are something we could really do without.
"I would say both are doubtful going into this weekend's game."
Better news for Relish was Edwards' two-goal return after stepping off the bench.
The striker had been withdrawn at Newport on Friday night due to a calf problem, but suffered no reaction to his efforts on Tuesday night.
City's reward for their victory is a third visit to Newport inside five weeks next month, although the date for the second-round clash has yet to be finalised.
